What’s going on?

When Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched in July 2026, CEO Miguel Zaldivar argued that the combination is unusual because it joins Hogan Lovells’ regulatory strength with Cadwalader’s high-end finance capability.

That matters particularly for financial institutions. A major financing can now raise issues spanning cybersecurity, sanctions and trade controls, data protection and environmental regulation. Cadwalader adds deeper structured finance, fund finance and capital markets capability, particularly in New York, while Hogan Lovells brings its regulatory platform, including significant strength in Washington, D.C.

What’s the signal?

HLC is betting that the line between finance and regulation is becoming increasingly blurred. Clients do not want one firm to structure a transaction and another to explain whether sanctions, cybersecurity rules or regulators might derail it. They want lawyers who can see the whole problem.
